Cork city witnessed a remarkable event on 14th April 2023 when Fahmeda Naheed and Usman Sharif arranged a community Iftaar dinner. The event was attended by a diverse group of people including representatives from the Lord Mayor’s office, TD Mick Barry, Cllr. Mick Nugent, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald, Cllr Colette Finn, Cllr John Maher, Cllr Kenneth Collins, Josephine McCarthy (Cork Migrant Centre), John Lennon, CEO Doras, Ini Usanga, Ado of Love and Care for People, participants of Fusion Cooking course, other members of the faith community, Muslims from Africa, Pakistani Cork Community, Turkey community, community members of Afghanistan, and cultural representatives of other countries.
The Faranree Community Centre, Cork and Cork City Partnership sponsored the event, and Evening Echo provided coverage. The event was organized to promote intercultural communication, interfaith dialogue, political participation of migrants, and sharing food. These themes were the topics of discussion for the Iftar-dinner night.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork City Damian Boylan represented the Lord Mayor’s office and spoke about the importance of community events in promoting inclusivity and diversity in Cork city. TD Mick Barry also spoke about the significance of the event and praised the efforts of the organizers in bringing together people from different backgrounds.
The participants of the Fusion Cooking course prepared delicious food for the event, which was enjoyed by everyone present. The event was an excellent opportunity for people from different cultures and religions to come together, break their fast, and engage in meaningful conversations.
