Cork, Ireland — A week of activity concluded on a meaningful note at University College Cork, where a vibrant Eid al-Fitr cultural event brought together a diverse international community in a celebration of unity, belonging, and shared traditions arranged by Irish Pakistani Community of Cork, and hosted by Fahmeda Naheed.
Held at the historic Aula Maxima, the event was hosted in collaboration with the UCC Muslim RAMPS+ Community. It welcomed Muslim researchers, alumni, and members of academia from across the globe, including South Asia, Ireland, the Middle East, and Africa, creating a rich and inclusive environment.
The evening was honoured by the presence of Kieran McCarthy, who attended on behalf of the Office of the Lord Mayor of Cork City. In his engaging and personable style, he shared insights into the history of UCC and Aula Maxima, while connecting warmly with attendees. A ceremonial Eid cake-cutting marked a key moment of the celebration.
Cultural exchange was at the heart of the event, particularly through a diverse spread of traditional foods. Guests enjoyed dishes such as Mumdani Biryani, Afghan Chapli Kebab with naan, alongside a wide selection of international desserts and sweets each reflecting the backgrounds and traditions of the attendees.
The programme also featured storytelling, reflections on Ramadan and Eid, and intergenerational conversations that highlighted Cork’s growing identity as a welcoming and inclusive city. A light-hearted and memorable moment came during the tradition of Eidi, when a supervisor gifted €50 to their student, sparking smiles and laughter among the audience.
The event was supported by UCC Students’ Union and the Irish Pakistani Community of Cork, whose contributions helped ensure its success.
Organisers noted that such events go beyond celebration, serving as important platforms for connection, understanding, and inclusion within the wider community.
The evening concluded with warm wishes of Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating, reinforcing the spirit of unity and shared humanity.
