Taoiseach Micheál Martin has wished Muslims in Ireland and across the world a ‘peaceful’ Ramadan, as the month-long period of observance began this week.
Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, the Fianna Fáil leader wrote: ‘#RamadanMubarak to Muslims in Ireland and across the world today.
‘I wish you all a peaceful month of prayer, charity and renewal.’
In 2021, Ramadan began on Monday, April 12, or Tuesday, April 13, and is identified as the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.
The Islamic calendar is lunar, with 12 months in a year of 354 days. Each year, lunar months shift by 11 days, meaning that the beginning of Ramadan varies on an annual basis, similarly to Easter.
In terms of Christian equivalents, Ramadan is perhaps comparable to the pre-Easter period of Lent.
