Brussels, July 2025 — Longford-based artist and human rights advocate Sadia Athar proudly represented Ireland this week at a special exhibition held within the European Parliament. Athar, known for her community engagement and activism, was invited to showcase her contribution to the One Million Stars Ireland Project, a global initiative using art to raise awareness against violence and promote hope and solidarity.
The exhibition brought together artists and activists from across Europe to highlight creative responses to human rights challenges, gender-based violence, and social exclusion. Sadia Athar’s participation stood out not only for her intricate star-weaving artwork but also for her heartfelt commitment to social change through creative expression.
“It’s an incredible honour to see a project rooted in local communities reach this level of recognition,” said Athar. “Through each star, we weave a message of hope, unity, and resilience.”
The One Million Stars Ireland Project, inspired by a movement founded in Australia, encourages individuals and communities to weave eight-pointed stars as symbols of light, peace, and solidarity. Sadia has been instrumental in promoting the initiative in Longford and beyond, particularly involving women, refugees, and minority communities.
Her visit to Brussels included a meeting with MEPs and other human rights campaigners, where she discussed the power of art in peacebuilding and community healing.
The event underscored the European Parliament’s growing recognition of grassroots cultural initiatives as key drivers of social cohesion and human rights advocacy.
