PIA to Resume Flight Operations to Swat After 17 Years

The airport was shut down in 2004 due to the deteriorating law and order situations in the region.

“PIA is going to resume flight operations to Saidu Sharif Airport (SDT), Swat, after 17 years,” PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan informed the Arab News, referring to Swat’s only airport. As per details, the airport was shut down in 2004 due to the deteriorating law and order situations in the region.The Taliban took over Swat from 2007-2009, destroying tourism. The official schedule of flights and frequency is yet to be released by the Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan. The nearest international airports to Swat that passengers and tourists coming from abroad can land on are Bacha Khan International Airport Peshawar or Islamabad International Airport.

The airport access road is called “Airport Road” the road westbound leads to the upper and north areas of swat such as Matta, Malam Jabba, and Kalam Valley, etc. The eastbound road of Swat Airport road leads to Kanju and Kabal and further to Mingora and Saidu Sharif across the Swat River. Saidu Sharif airport has basic facilities such as parking, cafeteria, waiting area, toilets, access for disabled persons, etc.
