Dublin, 30 June — As part of ongoing efforts to promote Pakistan–Ireland cultural cooperation, the Embassy of Pakistan, in collaboration with the Chester Beatty, hosted a special lecture titled “An Afternoon with the Magnificent Mughals” on 30 June. The event commemorated five centuries of the Mughal era in South Asia, marking the beginning of Mughal rule in 1526 and celebrating its enduring influence on the region’s art, culture, cuisine, architecture, and history.
The well-attended event brought together representatives from Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, cultural organisations, members of the diplomatic corps, ambassadors, and Ireland’s Ambassador to Pakistan, along with academics, historians, and members of the public with an interest in South Asian heritage.
The keynote speakers were Zeenut Ziad, author of The Magnificent Mughals, and Fionnuala Croke, Director of the Chester Beatty. Their presentations explored the remarkable legacy of the Mughal Empire, highlighting the patronage of arts, literature, architecture, and culture by successive Mughal emperors. They also discussed the significant contributions of Mughal queens and princesses, whose influence helped shape the cultural, artistic, and political history of South Asia.
During her presentation, Fionnuala Croke introduced the audience to the Chester Beatty’s internationally renowned collection of Mughal manuscripts, miniature paintings, and other historic artefacts, offering valuable insight into one of the world’s most significant collections of Mughal art outside South Asia.
The lecture concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, providing participants with an opportunity to discuss the Mughal legacy and its continuing relevance to cultural understanding and historical scholarship.
In her closing remarks, the Ambassador expressed appreciation to the distinguished speakers, the Chester Beatty, and all participants for contributing to the success of the event. She reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to fostering stronger cultural ties between Pakistan and Ireland through meaningful collaborations, educational initiatives, and cultural exchanges that promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.
